   THE WORLD UNITY FLAG

"Putting the unity back in community

People holding flag
INTRODUCTION:

Offered as a tool to promote ecologic stewardship and conservation. peace, reconciliation and planetary restoration (social, economic and environmental), the World Unity Flag is an art- metaphor, which by way it is made and distributed represents an inclusive, collaborative vision of a positive future.

Neither political nor religious, it is devoid of national affiliation, and is both a visual symbol and a multi-cultural activity.

Numerous hand-made World Unity Flags have been created by grass-roots groups and then passed from hand to hand, community to community (schools, universities, museums, conferences, ceremonies and celebrations) around the world following natural networks of human relations. "Dabs of diversity " and "common threads" of the painting and stiching process symbolize the "different strokes - different folks" and diversity, as well the thread of life which is passed from our anscestors to future generations.

The "fabric of humanity" is an interwoven tapestry of immense diversity, beautified and strengthened by "pulling together".

Spring of 1996, the World Unity Flag was first created for and introduced at an international environmental law conference held at the University of Victoria.  This conference brought attention to the trans-boundary need for the cooperative protection and stewardship of natural systems.

Acknowledging unity,  the inherent interconnectedness and interdependence of life, the World Unity Flag has been travelling freely throughout six of the seven continents of Earth in support and recognition of the future “seven generations” and beyond. The process of creating and passing on the World Unity Flag - reminds us to appreciate natural systems of Earth, Air, Water, Sky and Sun as the unifying elements on which all nations, all people, all life, depend.

Wherever it travels in the world, this flag acknowledges and honours indigenous nations, ancestral territories and protocals of state.

RATIONALE:
There have always been great challenges to be faced. Now global climate change has brought humanity and many other species with whom we share this Earth, to a recognized “tipping point." In order to survive, yet alone thrive, we must choose to see beyond differences, past borders and over barriers that separate. The World Unity Flag symbolizes this awareness.

Clean air, clean water, sufficient food, shelter from the elements and a climate-safe planet are universal human needs -  a right and responsiblilty we all share.
